While you and I journey through life we will experience storms, a season where things literally get turned upside down. Your storm may be to literally remove yourself out of a toxic situation to give JESUS a chance to restore all of your brokenness. In this world, we will experience so many different obstacles that can cause us to develop FEAR instead of a strong FAITH. Your storms might be spiritual if you continually allow Fear to replace your Faith or if you question God’s purpose for your life. No matter the type of storm, this Bible reading plan for 30 Days of Praising God in the Storms of Life, is for you.
I definitely noticed that this reading plan is not about merely surviving through a storm or its aftermath, but it involves actually praising God in the midst of the storm.
Are you as challenged by this as I am?
Mark 4:35-41 it states that,
“That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”
36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.
37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat so that it was nearly swamped.
38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Two very important questions were asked in this passage:
1. Why are you so afraid?
They had good reasons to be fearful. The storm was fierce. They were seasoned seamen, and they knew that the ship was in danger of sinking. They were familiar with the sea of Galilee, and they knew the danger of these sudden storms. We read that the ship was full of water. They had been no doubt bailing the water out but they could not keep up, it is coming in faster than they can bail it out.
2. Do you still have no faith?
This question seems like a rebuke. Their fear was a sign of their lack of faith. Faith and fear are mutually exclusive. If you have fear, you do not have faith, if you have faith, you will not fear. Your circumstances may be fearful, but you will not fear. Passing through the valley of the shadow of death would be a fearful experience if we did not know that the Lord was with us.
Take the next 30 days to praise God during whatever storms you are experiencing in your life.
- Praise God for who He is.
- Praise God for what he is done for you in the past and in the present.
- Praise God that He works all things together for good (Romans 8:28).
- Praise God knowing He has the resolution to your problem or situation already in the works.
- Praise God because it is your job (Luke 19:40).
Praising God in the storms of life means that all of us sooner or later are going to find ourselves in the midst of a fierce storm that will threaten our survival. You cannot escape the fact that one day you are going to be facing death. The Bible declares that it is appointed unto man once to die. That is one appointment that you cannot cancel.
However, your very survival will be dependent on whether or not Jesus is on board your ship. You cannot know how comforting it is to know that the Lord is with you when the storm begins to rage, you can have this confidence, for He said,
ISA 43:2 When thou passest through the waters, I [will be] with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
One big question remains, have you invited Jesus on board your ship?
If you’re wondering how to Practice Praising God in the Storms of Life, I’d love to give you a glimpse into the easy method I use every day.
All you need is you, your Bible, this reading plan and 5 minutes, and you’ll soon be digging into God’s Truth for yourself! I’m using the acronym SOAP to help you remember the steps:
S – Scripture
Write down the Bible passage you’ll be studying. This can be one verse or several. I’ve found that writing helps me focus on each word individually and on the passage as a whole. It also helps me soak it in and meditate on it.
O – Observations
Examine the text and write down what you notice.
What jumps out at you in the passage?
Who is it written by? Who is it written to?
What’s one thing you didn’t notice before?
What seems interesting or unusual?
What comes before and after the text?
Is there repetition, comparison, or contrast?
These observations may start with the obvious (i.e., Jesus spent time with his disciples), but will gradually become deeper.
A – Applications
Apply God’s Word to your life in a practical way. This is the part where you personalize your study of Scripture. As you read over the text, how does it apply to you? Is there a specific action you need to take or a confession you need to make?
If it’s an action, try to make it SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound.
P – Prayer
Respond to God’s Word with your own words. Accumulating head knowledge about God is of little use; it’s heart transformation He’s after, and that’s only possible through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Pray that the seed (the Scripture you just studied) falls on good soil in your heart so that it will take root and produce fruit. Praise God for His attributes revealed in the passage. Confess any sin that has come to light during this time of studying.
Thank Him for His Word and His care. And ask the Holy Spirit to continue growing you into a disciple of Jesus.
Samrawit Yohannes has a wonder S.O.A.P bible study journal called God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved designed for this purpose. The journal is only $9.99. I loved it so much I purchased 2 so that my sister and I can study this bible plan together.
That’s it! Easy-peasy, right?
